Featured Artist - Margaret Evangeline

Please join us at Weinberger Fine Art for the public viewing of new works by WFA artist Margaret Evangeline. This show will be on display from June through July 2021.

Margaret Evangeline is a contemporary painter, sculptor, and installation artist living and working in New York City. Growing up in Louisiana, Evangeline was immersed in a southern culture, which has contributed to her career as a contemporary artist. While the practice of painting remained an active passion for Evangeline, her family was growing quickly and she raised her three children while moving around the US before settling in New Orleans. It was there that Evangeline’s nascent artistic career took root. By 1978 she had become the first female recipient of an MFA in Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans. In 1992 Evangeline had her first show in New York City, a solo exhibition curated by Elizabeth Moore Fine Arts in conjunction with Res Nova Gallery, a recent New Orleans transplant at the time. The exhibition was well received and went on to garner a particularly insightful review by Eleanor Heartney in Art in America. This experience had a profound effect on Evangeline and ultimately led her to permanently relocate to New York, where she continues to live and work today.

Weinberger Fine Art is located at 114 Southwest Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108.

The duration of the exhibit is open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

Northern Catch - Lindsey Dunnagan

Please join us at Weinberger Fine Art for the public viewing of Northern Catch by WFA artist Lindsey Dunnagan. This show will be on display from January through March 2021.

“This series is a pleasure project inspired by my childhood of growing up in Anchorage, Alaska where I spent time by the ocean and watched the sky for the Aurora Borealis.  Each piece is multi-layered and includes images of fishing nets, the shapes of icebergs, and patterns found in the Alaskan landscape, such as ice striations.

Formally, some pieces are linked to one another because the series responds to and plays with process scraps.  For example, Migrating Silver is made of several paper layers.  The top layer has a hole cut in the shape of a fishing net.  Inside the hole are other fishing nets and iceberg shapes cut out of older paintings.  Every cut form becomes part of a new work.

The playful process of this work parallels my glance back at childhood.  By manipulating shapes from the place I love, the work evokes a panglossian nostalgia.” Lindsey Dunnagan

Weinberger Fine Art is located at 114 Southwest Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108.

The duration of the exhibit is open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

Let Democracy Bloom - Katrina Revenaugh

Please join us at Weinberger Fine Art for the public viewing of Let Democracy Bloom by Katrina Revenaugh. This show will be on display from November through December 2020.

“From a very early age, my mother taught me to love botanicals. Some of my best childhood memories consist of “helping” her work in planting beds and making pressed flower art. Through her, I learned a true appreciation for nature. To this day, spending time in a garden makes me happy—especially as a photographer.

For the past eleven years, I’ve photographed graffiti around the world. It’s been my passion to celebrate it in unusual ways. This series is no exception.

While traveling to shoot street art has been impossible during the pandemic, spending hours photographing in botanical gardens and green spaces has not. The quiet beauty of nature has been a refuge during this unusual time where we are distanced from so many of the things and people we love yet immersed in one of the most politically negative times in our history.

Creating these complex works that are blooming with abundance, bursting with color from graffiti walls, and sprinkled with positive gems of street art wisdom is my emotional response to those promoting division, intolerance, suppression, and uncertainty in our democracy. Now more than ever, it is important to exercise our right to vote. We must take a leap of faith. We must be resilient. We must persist.”

In his work, shapes and lines seem to be floating around each other as if they were suspended in space. The contrasting bold colors enhance the exuberant depth effect, creating a sensation of burgeoning life.

CODE PRACTICE

CODE PRACTICE (verb): a trigger and not a resolution; a provisional exploration; communication as process.

Screen Shot 2019-10-25 at 12.57.47 PM.png

Please join us in The Drawing Room on Friday, December 6th from 5 - 8pm for the public opening of CODE PRACTICE, a solo exhibition by James Woodfill. This exhibition runs through Saturday, January 25th.

CODE PRACTICE is an exhibition of artifacts excavated from James Woodfill’s personal investigations. James Woodfill’s practice has taken inspiration from many sources, from architectural models and hollow core doors to stagecraft and music, alongside the conditions of production and decision making he has set for himself. He amplifies these conditions as he works and reworks his approach leaving the residue of these processes behind at each stage: this residue is what we observe. This most recent work returns to a fundamental connection to painting and color present in his earliest work.

Like slicing and dicing a bushel of apples that must become juice before fermenting into vinegar, Woodfill’s work evolves in tandem with the conditions and context of his practice. Apples can give way to vinegar, but are equally likely to yield sauce, cake, or pie. It's all a matter of approach and the approach is culpable to the fluid nature of its context.

Woodfill’s approach embraces the provisional: the context of the world, his life, and his studio is not static and neither is the work. Instead of observing his artifacts, the residue, with a sense of heroic completion, Woodfill’s art inspires yet another set of parameters, yet another set of adjustments. As he engages with this practice he synchronizes with the provisional by making adjustments that resonate and create an active present outcome. It is when this energy is generated that Woodfill know’s he is where he needs to be within his temporary context and that his exploration has been successfully exemplified. Often the conclusion he arrives at is different from the conclusion he sought, but that is where the magic resides. Tomorrow will always be another story.

The opening reception for CODE PRACTICE will be held 5-8pm on December’s First Friday at The Drawing Room located at 1903 Wyandotte, Kansas City, MO 64108.

The exhibition is open through January 25th. We are open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

Shelf Life

Please join us in The Drawing Room on Thursday, October 3rd from 5 - 8pm for the public opening of SHELF LIFE, a solo exhibition of paintings by Tom Gregg

Kansas City artist Tom Gregg paints fantastically realistic still lifes that often pair bright color palettes with object clusters driven by metaphor and narrative. Ranging from the everyday beauty of melons and persimmons, to the romance of stemware and elegant ashtrays, to the ominous look of grenades posed in candy hued backgrounds, Gregg observes objects and their environment as a visual drama that provide him with a range of formal elements to explore and the unique ability to exert control over the scenes.

Gregg’s interest in still life painting stems from a fascination with the simple and profound existence of objects. Objects share the world of people while remaining independent of our struggles and exertions. Objects maintain a steadfast otherness while acquiring their meaning through our physical world: they are of our world, yet in a distinct world of their own — the world of things.

In addition to the opening reception on October 3rd, SHELF LIFE will also be open 5-8pm on Friday, October 4th for October’s First Friday.

The Drawing Room is located at 1903 Wyandotte, Kansas City, MO 64108

The duration of the exhibit is open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

Story In Color

Please join us in the Drawing Room on First Friday, September 6th from 5 - 8pm for the public opening of STORY IN COLOR a solo exhibition of new works by Cynthia Bjorn.

Cynthia Bjorn a contemporary painter who uses incredibly fine brushes to create modern, intensely layered paintings.

Bjorn has a fascination with mark making.  Using the painting’s surface as a metaphor for conversation, she layers fine strokes of paint until a statement that captures her intention and intuitive voice emerges. Bjorn’s process is highly meditative as she slowly builds each composition before applying a precise coat of resin. The process of applying resin freezes her meditation in process imbuing each piece with its own personality and emotional energy.

The opening reception for STORY IN COLOR will be held 5-8pm on September’s First Friday at The Drawing Room located at 1903 Wyandotte, Kansas City, MO 64108.

In addition to the exhibition, an artist talk will take place on Saturday, September 14th from 2 - 4pm.

The duration of the exhibit is open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

BOAT SHOW

Please join us in the Drawing Room on Friday, July 5th from 5 - 8pm for the public opening of Steve Snell’s solo exhibition featuring his new works.

Snell is a contemporary painter who is interested in  Americana as it relates to rural small-town life, the exploration of the wild, and the aesthetics of adventuring.

He creates brightly hued monochromatic portraits of wild animals and classically masculine American figures like Burt Reynolds along with clever renderings of the contemporary outdoorsman’s supplies like pretzels and gummy bears. These objects are thrust unnaturally into both demure, watery landscapes and intensely saturated natural backgrounds where organic shapes give way to symmetrical, geometric compositions that elevate these simple objects into something much greater. Through these juxtapositions Snell explores notions of rugged masculinity, the historical adventures of adventurers like Lewis and Clark, and what it looks like to be a contemporary outdoorsman.

The Drawing Room is located at 1903 Wyandotte Street.

The duration of the exhibit is open to the public from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Friday and Noon-5pm on Saturday’s.

Join us Friday, November 2nd for the opening of Nancy Friedman-Sanchez’s Cornucopia. With an explosion of flora, Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez’s exhibition at Weinberger Fine Art’s Drawing Room explores colonialism, identity, and cultural hybridity.

Following the artist’s immigration from Colombia, Friedemann-Sánchez began creating art that deals with the tension of displacement. Drawing and painting intricate flowers and lace, she addresses Spanish colonialism, bilingualism, and patriarchal oppression. Her work is strikingly laborious, chillingly ominous, and indulgently lush.
